Hacker gets biggest prison time to date
A skilled San Francisco computer intruder was sentenced here Friday to 13 years in federal prison for stealing nearly two million credit card numbers from banks, businesses and other hackers — in what is the longest hacking sentence in U.S. history.
Max Ray Vision, 37, was also ordered to pay $27.5 million in restitution, and to serve five years under court supervision following his release, during which time he’ll be allowed to use computers only for legitimate employment or education

A man in southern China was sentenced to 13 years in jail for running a pornographic Web site, a state news agency reported Sunday, amid a national crackdown on lewd online content. The court in the Guangdong province city of Jiangmen handed down the sentence to Huang Yizhong and fined him 100,000 yuan ($14,600), the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Google is spreading its wings in yet another direction – this time as a network provider, offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes. It plans to build a fibre-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes.
http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/options

Almost a year after the FCC first announced their National Broadband Plan, some new details have started to emerge. Specifically: A plan to give 100 million households 100Mbps broadband.

Nearly three years after an Arkansas school launched a trial that delivered laptops, iPods and wireless internet to a bus, an Arizona school district is discovering the merits of such a system — though with this one, there stands a good chance for it to go well beyond the “pilot” phase. Students in Vail, Arizona have been able to handle school assignments, engage in research and even update their Facebook status on the lengthy rides to and from school, and the suits responsible for hooking Bus No. 92 up have stated that mischief has all but subsided and the bus has magically morphed into something of a “rolling study hall.”

With the interest in the video of Nodar Kumaritashvili’s fatal luge accident at the Winter Olympics has remained high over the past few days, dominating Google Trends. But malware peddlers have quickly caught wind, and are using the video as an opportunity to spread malware to unsuspecting users.Like similar scams that spread via video, you arrive at what appears to be a YouTube embed, but are then asked to install new software in order to watch it That software is actually malware, and can wreak havoc on a victim’s computer.
Hardware anti-virus patent awarded to Russian lab
The Russian Kaspersky Lab has itself a shiny, new U.S. patent for a “hardware-based anti-virus system.” The basic idea is to run an anti-virus mechanism at a level lower than what a rootkit can penetrate.

The full patent description is as follows:

An anti-virus (AV) system based on a hardware-implemented AV module for curing infected computer systems and a method for updating AV databases for effective curing of the computer system. The hardware-based AV system is located between a PC and a disk device. The hardware-based AV system can be implemented as a separate device or it can be integrated into a disk controller. An update method of the AV databases uses a two-phase approach. First, the updates are transferred to from a trusted utility to an update sector of the AV system. Then, the updates are verified within the AV system and the AV databases are updated. The AV system has its own CPU and memory and can be used in combination with AV application.

Are your passwords protected?
Analysis of the 32 million passwords exposed last month in the breach of social media application developer RockYou – who’s applications can be used on Facebook and Myspace – provides further proof that consumers routinely use easy-to-guess login credentials.

Google says it will not “voluntarily” comply with the government’s request that it censor YouTube videos in accordance with broad “refused classification” (RC) content rules.
University of Sydney associate professor Bjorn Landfeldt, one of Australia’s top communications experts, said that to comply with Conroy’s request Google “would have to install a filter along the lines of what they actually have in China”.

Apparently they think that a different medium somehow deserves different treatment. I don’t think they understand that e-books, movies, music, and whatever else gets sold on a digital marketplace are all completely interchangeable as far as DRM strategy goes: you can do it, but people won’t like it, and eventually you’ll have to relent. And the fun part is that the DRM will not be effective — since the people who want to circumvent the DRM will always find a way to do so, and those who don’t want to do it wouldn’t try in the first place.

Apple hasn’t officially commented yet, but according to The New York Times, Steve Jobs may finally cooperate on an authorized biography.Other biographers have attempted to tell Mr. Jobs’s life story without his express involvement or even consent, prompting him to respond by yanking books by the same publishers from Apple stores. Now two sources have confirmed to the Times that former Time magazine managing editor Walter Isaacson will get Jobs’s cooperation in producing an authorized biography of the Apple CEO.
Anders Norman of Sweden recently suffered a major house fire, but has emerged from it with some good humor and a scorched but amazingly still functional computer. He tells us that even the mouse’s scroll wheel is operational and he took a picture of the iMac displaying the local news website’s report of his home’s unfortunate demise.

Even Kingston Knocks Off Kingston microSD Cards?
Kingston appears to buy all the actual flash storage chips inside their microSD cards from Sandisk/Toshiba, yet they often still manage to undercut the microSD prices of manufacturers like Sandisk and Samsung. Of course, Kingston needs to make up the money somewhere, and the controller chip is the only other place that’s possible. So Kingston may be stretching their thresholds of controller chip quality to make profitability possible—at minimum, the impetus is certainly there.

News Story’s For This Week

Reminder: Windows 7 RC shutdowns start in a month
A Reminder for all the Windows 7 users still using the Release Candidate (build 7100) that was released to the public in May 2009. Bi-hourly shutdowns of this build will begin on March 1, 2010. This means that the user will be told to install a released version of Windows and their PC will shut down automatically every two hours. On June 1, 2010, if you are still on the Windows 7 RC, your license will expire and the non-genuine experience will be triggered. Your wallpaper will be removed and “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will be displayed in the lower right corner of your desktop, above the taskbar. Starting on February 15, 2010, Windows 7 RC should actually start giving daily prompts to remind you about the expiration, but just in case two weeks’ notice isn’t enough, we’re letting you know a month in advance.
If you want to continue using Windows 7, it is recommend moving over to the Windows 7 RTM (build 7600) that was released to the public in October 2009. Microsoft explained that this would happen when it gave out free copies of the beta (which has already expired) and RC builds, and you’ve had plenty of time to move over. If you haven’t reinstalled a final copy of Windows, do so as soon as possible so as to avoid problems in the next few weeks.

27-inch iMac production halted?
Apple has stopped production of its multi-troubled 27-inch iMac.
Or so say unnamed sources speaking to MacBidouille/HardMac. According to those sources, production of both the Core i5 and Core i7 models has been shut down entirely. The Core 2 Duo versions of Apple’s top-of-the-line all-in-one were not mentioned.

Google to kill IE6
Google is continuing to kill off support for Internet Explorer 6 in its services; the search giant has announced that two more of its Web properties will stop supporting IE6 as of March 1. “Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers,” a blog post on the Official Google Enterprise Blog begins to explain. “We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products — as well as new Docs and Sites features — won’t work properly in older browsers.” Older browsers, according to Google, include anything prior to IE7, Firefox 3.0, Chrome 4.0, and Safari 3.0.

Google: We’ll pay $500 to $1,337 for every security bug you find in Chrome
In an attempt to minimize security vulnerabilities in its Web browser, Google has announced a new program that could earn you a few bucks. The search giant is paying between $500 and $1,337 per security flaw found in either Chrome or Chromium.

26-year-old Matthew Delorey, was selling hacked Comcast cable modems that enabled users to obtain free Internet access. The hacker modified the modems’ MAC address so that it would appear as another modem, one whose owner was paying for Internet access. What finally did him in was selling the hacked modems VIA Craigslist, and other means and finely selling two of the modified modems to undercover FBI agents.

Walmart and Best Buy Give Up on Used Games Business
In May, Walmart began accepting trade-ins through the E-Play machines at 77 locations throughout the northeast. Then in June, several Best Buy locations in Texas began taking trade ins. Both programs worked, but neither generated enough business to be profitable.

MPAA wants Grandmother kicked off the net for file sharing nothing
Greg Sandoval, over at News.com recently came across a grandmother who was falsely accused multiple times of file sharing, and her ISP, Qwest, was threatening to kick her off the internet. We had not heard that Qwest had signed on with a “three strikes” program, so it’s a bit of news that it’s one of the companies who will accept bogus accusations. Not only that, but Qwest even told her that no other provider would grant her service because Qwest would let those other service providers “know her name and what she did.” Thanks, Qwest!
So the only way she got Qwest to back down was because Sandoval and News.com became interested in the story and convinced Qwest to look deeper.

PETA Wants Groundhog Replaced with Robot
File this under “strange but true.” Apparently one of PETA’s latest projects is an attempt to save Punxsutawney Phil from the cruel and unusual treatment of being forced to see his shadow (or not) every February 2. They believe that the ceremony is “traumatizing and stressful” for the groundhog, and that he should be replaced by a robot.

China Using Freebie Flash Drives to Spy on Britain
UK security agency MI5 has issued a warning regarding freebie flash drives and cameras. Apparently Chinese spies are handing them out to UK businessmen in hopes of infecting their computers with trojans and gaining access to corporate secrets.

55in TV’s are illegal! The super bowl police will get you
Did you know that you can’t watch the Super Bowl on a TV screen larger than 55 inches? Yeah, it’s right there in the law.

US Code Title 17, Chapter 1, Section 110 is called “Limitations on exclusive rights: exemption of certain performances and displays,”

and it lays out 12 of these exemptions to copyright restrictions. Are 55+ inch TVs mentioned specifically? They certainly are.
TV broadcasts and movie showings can only be displayed so long as “no such audiovisual device has a diagonal screen size greater than 55 inches, and any audio portion of the performance or display is communicated by means of a total of not more than 6 loudspeakers.” So there it is in black and white—a ban on big TVs!

Cartoon porn will get you jailtime in AU
If you live in Australia, however, you may want to take extra care that your porn stash doesn’t contain cartoon imagery of children. A man in Australia was recently convicted for possessing pornographic images depicting characters from The Simpsons and The Powerpuff Girls, and is now a registered sex offender.

Handheld Cellphone Bans Don’t Reduce Car Crashes After All
According to a study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, hand-held phone bans have no effect on the frequency of car crashes.

Month-to-month fluctuations in rates of collision claims in jurisdictions with bans didn’t change from before to after the laws were enacted. Nor did the patterns change in comparison with trends in jurisdictions that didn’t have such laws.

Honestly, this makes some sense, given that it’s not phones themselves that are the problem, but the distraction they cause. There are plenty of other legal methods of taking your eyes off the road, and a hands-free conversation isn’t necessarily any safer than one where you’ve got your phone in your hand.

Armatix handgun can only be fired by someone wearing the correct watch
This seems like a really good idea. A German company called Armatix has developed a handgun that can only be fired by someone wearing a biometrically unlocked wrist watch. An LED light on the gun glows green if it’s set to be fired or red if it’s locked. Barny thinks its a good idea, at least be wont shoot his toe off LOL.

Google has updated its browser toolbar after the application was caught tracking urls even when specifically “disabled” by the user.
In a Monday blog post, Harvard professor and noted Google critic Ben Edelmen provided video evidence of the Google toolbar transmitting data back to the Mountain View Chocolate Factory after he chose to disable the application in the browser window he was currently using.
The Google toolbar offers two disable options: one is meant to disable the toolbar “permanently,” and the other is meant to disable the app “only for this window.”

In a move that must surely strike at the very core of open source, FOSS, and the heart of GNU crusader Richard Stallman, SourceForge has now blocked all access from by countries on the U.S. ‘Foreign Assets Control sanction list’.
That isn’t the beginning of the story though: back in 2008 the same countries were allowed to surf SourceForge, but not interact with the source code repositories — they could download, but couldn’t contribute. Now it seems the access block is complete — if you live in Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan or Cuba, you simply can’t access SourceForge.

The vulnerability in the Windows Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) subsystem was disclosed Tuesday by Google engineer Tavis Ormandy on the Full Disclosure security mailing list.

Predictions for 2010

Its now the new year and I was planing on having the 2010 Predictions here before the new year but, I got a lazy streak with the holidays and junk.
Hi, First off I love the podcast. I’ve been listening for quite a while now, well over a year I think. I remember when you had Gomem on, he was amazing. What ever happened to him? Hope he’s ok. Anyways I am just emailing in the hope I can give you some encouragement to keep making shows. I was made up when I saw the new show for download I was worried when they sort of trailed off. I haven’t heard the new one yet because I’ve got a train ride tomorrow so I’ve saved it. I was on your site and saw you have a form for applying to be a guest host. I’d love to be one of the shows. I don’t know how good I would be, I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t have my own decent mic (but maybe access to one). I follow tech and listen to a lot of podcasts and I am a systems manager for the government in England. But that sounds an awful lot more important than it actually is. I basically reset passwords and unjam printers. But still I would love to give it a go so if you fancy it let me know. And thanks for the show mate. Just keep making them.
